Strategic landscape led residential neighbourhoods
Colour were initially appointed to prepare a landscape masterplan and impact assessment for this strategic neighbourhood on the outskirts of Sunderland intended as the generator of revenue to kick start regeneration of the Sunderland Riverside masterplan for Sunderland City Council with Igloo.
Working collaboratively with David Rudlin at URBED, we developed the structure for this landscape led masterplan followed by design services for the design and delivery of housing plots and infrastructure works including a significant SUDS scheme.
In a location with stunning long distance views to the North Sea over Sunderland and across the Durham coastline, the new neighbourhood is made up of several character areas which create distinct village-type zones. Framed viewing corridors of landmarks beyond the site root streets and spaces in the local character.
Key design parameters and guidelines for were set out in the design codes to accompany the masterplan and guide development of individual housing plots.
A structure of high quality public open spaces tie the neighbourhoods together promoting healthy lifestyles and social interaction whilst also protecting, enhancing and capitalising on the natural features of the site.
This green infrastructure integrates existing public pathways and bridleways, creating a purposeful gateway to the wider countryside for residents and neighbours. A SANG (Strategic Alternative Green Space) will help take pressure off nearby open spaces whilst also offering extra amenity to local residents.
The process includes extensive engagement with local residents and Colour as an expert witness at Public Enquiry successfully demonstrating the significant increase in available public rights of way through the Site.
