A healthy, inclusive residential neighbourhood in East London
Colour were appointed by the London Borough of Newham to develop a landscape strategy for the residential redevelopment of 116 new-build 100% affordable PassivHaus Plus, carbon neutral homes on a former dockworkers' housing site, close to the Royal Docks, in Custom House, East London.
Our approach sought to reconnect this previously abandoned and inaccessible site with the surrounding community, strengthening links to valued neighbourhood assets while creating welcoming, nature-rich spaces that encourage healthy living and social interaction.
Working collaboratively with architects KKM and the wider multidisciplinary design team, local community and Design Review Panel, we developed a landscape-led masterplan structured around a communal garden at the heart of the development. This green space brings residents together through opportunities for informal play, relaxation, socialising and community food growing, with integrated natural play features encouraging children to explore and engage with nature.
A key design intervention is the transformation of an enclosed pedestrian route, previously associated with antisocial behaviour, into an attractive, overlooked garden mews – a direct route to that . Widened footpaths, new residential frontages, accessible routes and biodiverse planting create a safer, more welcoming connection towards Prince Regent DLR station.
The landscape strategy also places nature recovery and climate resilience at the forefront of the design. Native and pollinator-friendly planting, orchard trees, species-rich grassland, rain gardens and biodiverse green roofs combine to strengthen local green infrastructure, manage surface water and support urban wildlife. The integration of photovoltaic panels with green roofs further demonstrates a holistic approach to environmental sustainability.
References to the site's maritime heritage are woven into the landscape, creating a distinctive sense of place rooted in the history of the Royal Docks.
The proposals demonstrate how thoughtful landscape design can transform a constrained urban site into an inclusive, resilient neighbourhood where people and nature can thrive together.
