Bristol Temple Quays
In a strategic position next to Bristol Temple Meads railway station and Valentine’s Bridge at the gateway to the Temple Quays regeneration area and overlooking the River Avon, Colour helped Sheppard Robson with a planning approval for this mixed use development for Marick Real Estate.
Comprising build to rent apartments, an apart hotel, offices, retail and food and beverage units, the new city block required streetscape, a semi-public courtyard and a connecting section of Bristol’s emerging riverside walk so as to fit into the urban landscape with a full pedestrian experience.
Public realm proposals supported by landscape will enhance the site as a component of and contributor to the green infrastructure of Temple Meads and the strategic green infrastructure network of the wider city. Through bringing in nature, it will create a calm green courtyard at the heart of the site, enhance the quality of streetscape with trees, create an attractive space overlooking the river and carefully manage potential flood risk.
This inclusive, people-orientated environment aimed to promote health and wellbeing responds in function and character to the proposed buildings and their unique setting at Temple Quays.
As well as addressing contemporary design requirements relating to access, safety, environmental stewardship and maintenance, a deeper historic narrative relating to the site’s former use as a goods yard for Temple Meads train station, is also woven into the designed landscape. Although no original features remain on site, aspects of the site’s past will be echoed and expressed through the abstracted forms and materiality of the new landscape.
