Farnborough FAB

Farnborough is world famous for its biennial international air show, held where the first powered flight within the UK took place.  The town continues to be a leader in aviation innovation and aeronautics science with its airport a focus for private jets.

Colour won a limited invitation competition to design a public space in the town centre funded by Rushmoor Borough Council’s success with the Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF) aimed at helping to support local communities as part of the government’s wider levelling up agenda.

Proposals were driven by a need for somewhere that could host a weekly market and other events and gatherings through the year.  Located at an unloved end of the high street the approach was to celebrate the remarkable aviation history with a refreshed space that opens up the entrance to the Meads Shopping Centre, introducing seating where there was none.

Environmentally, collaboratively we have managed surface water run-off through SuDS including rain gardens, improving urban green and enhancing Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) with an inclusive play-centred external environment.

Working to a tight budget, Colour helped deliver this flexible open space which is now open to the public and will help attract new businesses to the high street.
