JubiIee Gardens

St. Albans

Appointed through design competition, Colour developed the public realm and landscape masterplan for transformation of a council owned car park and back of house service area into a desirable setting for mixed use midrise living and working.

The masterplan drew inspiration and sympathetic reference to local Listed Buildings and the Conservation Area, rethinking of the existing Quaker Memorial Garden, Burial Ground and responding to urban grain with its town centre proximity and connections.

A sustainable environment with high quality public realm was created using materials which reflect the local vernacular of St Albans as well as more immediate inspiration taken from the architectural development.  Movement is encouraged across the development, with the central axis anchoring the design, enabling free pedestrian movement throughout.

Changes in levels were positively dealt with to create inviting places to dwell and intuitive movement routes whilst swathes of robust, evergreen and biodiverse planting to create a pleasant transition from one space to the next.

Key aspects :

  • Competition winning people orientated public realm led development

  • Transformation of underutilised council owned land in partnership with the local authority

  • Gateway site with a direct north-south route towards the ‘back of the high street’

  •  Sensitive incorporation of historic features and relationship with conservation area

  •  Positive addressing of levels offering pedestrian accessibility given constraints of the Quaker Garden, basement car parking and topography.
