Creating new neighbourhoods for people rooted in local identity is central to our approach to urban design and place strategy through to detailed delivery. The £84 million Milburngate, a natural extension of Durham city centre with its iconic views of the Durham Cathedral World Heritage Site from retail and leisure terraces, framed views of church spire between buildings and public realm with an open aspect to the River Wear is no different.
A highly complex technical solution over 4 levels, Colour developed RIBA Stage 3 information into a highly co-ordinated technical design for construction on site using a REVIT platform for this BIM Level 2 project with 80% of external spaces being constructed over podium structures.
The overall site masterplan is made of distinct character areas that provide definition between residential and commercial areas and a feeling of semi-private defensible space.
Apartment blocks including 153 luxury PRS apartments are arranged around a central courtyard space, providing green views, a welcoming arrival statement and usable leisure space for residents away from the busier public spaces on site. Each block includes a shared roof terrace, a social area where residents can meet their neighbours with a choice of seating locations whilst appreciating spectacular views over the wider City.
Reviewing previous designs, we compiled information for a series of new planning applications for the site, which includes the addition of a new public space in the heart of the development – ‘Durham Square’.
