Thornborough Hall

Corbridge, Northumberland

A thorough, insightful and creative approach is essential for survey, analysis and design of a successful Paragraph 84(e) house.  This true understanding of site and setting is critical to exceeding the high bar that is set.

Collaboratively with Thirty Three Architecture and E3 Ecology this was achieved with timely steering by The Design Review Panel with on-site and online review sessions so as to effectively develop proposals that will enhance both the landscape within this former quarry and its surroundings as they mature.

Thornborough Hall was approved at planning and is now constructed.  It is located on the south facing valley side of the River Tyne above a wooded slope it has a pastoral setting with Corbridge being the nearest town and scattered villages/ hamlets to the north and south.

Suiting our client’s lifestyle and delivering a diverse range of new habitats for biodiversity, a garden has been designed that is formed of a series of garden areas including a :

Fernery Walk with boulders, ferns and woodland edge plants on a slope to the north of the house.

Scree garden referencing the site’s previous life as a quarry, an exploration of valuable native plants.

Walled kitchen garden with raised beds and espaliered fruit trees surrounding outdoor dining with uninterrupted views to parkland fields beyond the site.

Lake view terrace looking to the south, easing the building into the landscape beyond and with a rill leading the eye towards the lake.

Formal lawn taking in further views of the landscape.

Colour were central to the transformation of this site with LVIA and landscape design services.  The planning approval was achieved in record time for a Paragraph 84(e) house.
