Centre Square
Middlesbrough
Named the ‘Young Hercules’ in the 19th Century, Middlesbrough’s rise to an industrial powerhouse in the 20th Century was meteoric as it was a hamlet with a population of only 25 in 1801.
We worked closely with the local council to help translate their aspirations into a place strategy to bring life back to the town centre.
Now connected to London via mainline railway, there has been huge investment in the town centre by Middlesbrough Council. As part of their £68m investment prospectus which planned to create 5,000 jobs across the town, with Centre Square the centrepiece.
Colour’s vision has played a key role in restoring the beat to the heart of the town with a deliverable masterplan, public realm enhancements for Centre Square, Albert Road, the Town Hall, connection to the retail core and a broader lighting strategy. We are very proud that much has now been implemented by local artists and businesses.
Colour worked closely with many departments of Middlesbrough Council, stakeholders at the Middlesbrough Museum of Modern Art (MiMA), Teesside University, the Combined Courts, the Chamber of Commerce and Seymour Architecture.
Close to the 140th birthday of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the designer of the red phone box, one of our light installation concepts was interpreted and delivered by artist Stephen Hurrel in 2020.
The wider Centre Square masterplan was launched by Councillor Rooney for Middlesbrough Council in February 2019, here’s the press release:
