David Barter
Senior Landscape Designer
Masters in Landscape Architecture, University of Sheffield 2010
BSc (Hons) Psychology and Sociology, University of Leicester 2006
David brings over 7 years of professional design experience, underpinned by earlier work as a Community Development Officer on two major HLF schemes in South London.
His creative approach blends illustration, community insight and ecological awareness, enabling him to shape projects that are both imaginative and grounded in local needs.
David contributes to projects across the studio, including estate masterplanning at Rockliffe Hall Hotel, community‑focused landscape proposals for the Lighthouse Project in Byker, and design development for Wynyard Living. He also leads Colour’s monthly share‑o‑thon, fostering knowledge exchange across the team.
Outside the studio, David is a keen sketcher, climber, traveller and a part‑time tutor o the Masters in Landscape Design at Newcastle University.
As a Senior Landscape Designer, David supports the development of public realm proposals from concept through technical resolution. He is adept at communicating design ideas to a wide range of stakeholders, ensuring clarity for community groups, local authorities and project teams. His crucial role on the Hillingdon Water Sports Facility demonstrates this strength with clear technical diagrams and thoughtful coordination of landform, water and habitats within a Site of Special Scientific Interest. This helped reverse initial planning objections from both Natural England and the Environment Agency.
Great people to work with, great projects to work on and a great working environment.
This impact on people’s lives and the wider communities of Newcastle and York should not be underestimated.
